Let's talk: Post Graduation

Updated: Aug 13

Throughout the majority of my adolescence, I have kept the same relative group of friends. We did everything together from school to partying in the most random cornfields. Post-Grad, things look a lot different now. I am one of the only ones in my friend group who still lives with my parents and hasn't started a family. At first, I felt like I was so behind, I felt that everyone around me was farther ahead and I needed to be up there with them. The pressure of fast-pacing my life fell upon me. I was so hard on myself on being behind, and still not being financially stable, and feeling like I needed to figure everything out at once. After dealing with this internally, I have learned that slowing down is okay.
If you have ever felt like me, like you have to have everything figured out like yesterday, then I am here to tell you that it is okay to “be behind”. In today's society, everyone expects you to be up and ready to be a full fledged adult as soon as you graduate, but sometimes that is not as attainable for everyone.
These past few years have been some of the worst years to become an adult. Our economy is more fucked than its ever been. Rent prices in today's society are higher than the majority of the entry level jobs are offering to pay you. You're expected to make 3x $1200 a month to even qualify for basic housing, while you can barely find a job that pays you more than $15.00 per hour. With luck and connections, finding jobs is easy, but without those things it can be a slow process. Comparing yourself to other people and different situations and making yourself feel less than is pointless because everyone has different situations, it may look easy but sometimes it’s harder than it seems but people wont show the struggle, just the pay off.
Focus on what you need to do to be successful, this won't look the same for everyone. Success is subjective, yours can be getting an education and building a career, starting a family, or travelling wherever your heart desires. Success is whatever makes you feel whole, not what you see everyone else doing.
